What if your last kiss was with the wrong boy?
Cassidy Haines remembers her first kiss vividly. It was on the old covered bridge the summer before her freshman year with her boyfriend of three years, Ethan Keys. But her last kiss–the one she shared with someone at her seventeenth birthday party the night she died–is a blur. Cassidy is trapped in the living world, not only mourning the loss of her human body, but left with the grim suspicion that her untimely death wasn’t a suicide as everyone assumes. She can’t remember anything from the weeks leading up to her birthday and she’s worried that she may have betrayed her boyfriend.
If Cassidy is to uncover the truth about that fateful night and make amends with the only boy she’ll ever love, she must face her past and all the decisions she made–good and bad–that led to her last kiss.
I like mystery stories and this book sounded like it could be really good.  Cassidy we only see alive for the very first chapter and for the rest of the book she is following others around trying to solve the questions behind her own death and falling into memories as she recovers them.  One part I did enjoy was seeing how people reacted to her death, like her family and closest friends.   Aimee and Ethan were the characters I liked the most.  They were very devoted to Cassidy and great people to her.  Madison I never really liked from the beginning because she was so back and forth.
There were a bunch of time jumps since there are so many flashbacks as Cassidy gains memories and we fall into them with her.  At several points it confused me when we went into the past because there wasn’t a clear transition all the time, but it becomes easier the more you read.  For me, there weren’t any characters that were super amazing, but most of them were likeable.  Others could be hard to keep up with because we didn’t really see them enough to care to really remember their names.
Several points of the book were predictable, aside from one that I can think of.  And though there was a lot of predictability, I still enjoyed following Cassidy’s story as she unraveled what happened to her and what happens between her and Ethan.  Though this book isn’t amazing, it is still an enjoyable read and I recommend it to those who enjoy mysteries and ghost type stories.

I killed my first victim at thirteen years old – my age, not his. He was going to rape me, him and a couple of his friends. And so, I killed him. And then… I killed again. And again.
At seventeen, I’m killing four to six times a year – maybe more. Don’t stress out. I only go after the pedophiles and rapists. There are more out there than I could cover in a lifetime.
Saying I did this on my own would be selfish. Enforcing justice holds a glory all its own. But now, my lifelong friend and backup, Deegan, has been arrested. I have to decide if I want to give myself up and take his place or leave him with all the damning evidence. I don’t want to stop killing. But if I let him take the fall, I can’t kill anymore. And I need to keep doing that.
But the worst part of it all? I love him.

Excerpt

We stopped beside my bike.  I ran my fingers through my loose hair.  “Thanks for the flower.”

“Of course.  Together, right?”  He leaned with one arm above his head on the wall beside the bike rack.  “I don’t think the two crimes will be linked.  The techniques and circumstances were too different.  We should be in the clear.”  The late springs sun already worked on kissing his blond hair lighter in spots.  I couldn’t stop staring.

“I wanted to talk to you about that.”  I folded my arms and titles my head.

He brushed his bangs from his eyes. “Oh?”

“Yeah.  I was thinking it’d be good to, I don’t know, continue?”  I bit my lip and looked down.  How was I supposed to propose we find other sickos?  He’d never shown anything other than guilt regarding our actions.  While I had more complex emotions surrounding the circumstances, I didn’t doubt the sincerity or weight of the feelings he had.

The silence drew my gaze.  We stared into each other’s eyes.  He spoke first, his voice soft.  “Do you really want to do this?”

I shook my head no while saying, “Yes.”  Pressing my fingers to my forehead, I stopped moving.  “I’m sorry.  It’s not that I want to do this, like I want to?  It’s more like I almost feel like I need to.  Two people who no longer can hurt anyone else.”  Despair welled inside me.  “You think I can sleep afterwards?  I feel sick, can’t eat.  But then I saw Kari’s face when she heard he was gone and I… I felt a sense of accomplishment, like I’d done a good thing.”  I covered my face, breathing deep – the hot air recycling back to warm my skin.  Sliding my fingers onto my eyelids, I pressed up onto the upper curve of my eye sockets.  “But how can what I’ve done be good, right?  It’s wrong to kill.  It’s wrong to feel good about it.  It’s wrong to think about a possible next one.”  I dropped my hands.

Deegan watched me, his eyes sad and his lips curved in a side smile that held no humor.  “I don’t know how much of what we’ve done is necessary, you now?”  He shoved his hands into his jean pockets and hunched his shoulders.  “Do you know how many of these guys get off everyday?  Or they get such light sentences and then they’re released to go hurt more kids again.”

I spun from him, raising my hands and beseeching the sky.  “What are we doing?  Murder is wrong.”  And to so bluntly use the word slapped me across the face.  Murder.

Excerpt

Hunter cut off with a strangled sound, and in an instant, he was at the door. “They’re coming,” he hissed over his shoulder.

“What? Already? You said we’d have until nightfall!”

“I was wrong.” He shut the door quickly and rushed to the opposite wall. “You need to hide.” He pulled back a board to reveal a small cubby in the wall. “Quickly!”

Nora ran without arguing.

“Get in,” he told her, “and don’t make a sound.” Nora nodded. Her pulse raced, and a jolt of adrenaline kicked through her. A mixture of fear and dread came over her as she pushed herself into the wall. There wasn’t much space, and splinters and rough pieces of wood pierced her skin and got caught on her clothing. She wedged herself farther in.  Hunter replaced the board.

Light scattered in from cracks along the wall.  Nora pressed an eye to one of them. She could see the entire space between her and the entrance door. Hunter stood facing the door with his back to her. His feet were wide in a predatory stance.

Anxious minutes passed. Only Nora’s ragged breaths broke the silence, and they sounded as loud as hammers to her ears.

Slowly, the door started to move. Hunter tensed.

It creaked all the way open, and a tall figure stepped into the entrance. Nora’s breath caught. It was the same man from the dream, the same one she saw at the school.

“Where’s your friend?” the man asked Hunter crudely. He spoke with a harsh accent.

If it were possible, Hunter tensed even more. The man took a step forward. He wore the same long coat from before, the same dark hat. He and Hunter were approximately the same height. Leisurely, he started to take off his coat. Hunter still hadn’t moved.

The man dropped his coat in a pile at his side, and Nora saw that he was much thicker than Hunter. Bigger, more developed.

Stronger.

“Don’t try to hide her. I can smell her stench from here. I know she is with you.”

“You will not have her.” Hunter’s voice held a steely edge.

The man laughed. “Oh? Is that so?  And you think you’re going to stop me?” He laughed again. “You have broken the ancient creed by bringing her into our world. You will answer for your crime.  As will she.”

“You will not have her,” Hunter repeated, his voice filled with a deathly calm.

The man waved dismissively and took a step toward Hunter. “You cannot stop me,” he said. “And I don’t intend to take only her. You’ll be coming along, as well.”

“No,” Hunter growled.

“Oh, yes, I will take you both.” The man stood only a pace away from Hunter, now. “You cannot imagine what they will do to you. You will be bound in chains, locked away to never again see the dark of night or feel the cool rays of the moon. You will grow weak and feeble, forever barred from taking blood. You will never feed again.

“Your body will go first. Your muscles will wither to nothingness.  Your bones will crumble. You will become a shadow of what you once were. A shadow of what you could have been.
“But they will keep your mind sharp. Make no mistake, you will know you are suffering. An antidote will be administered, and it will stave off the madness that accompanies your deprivation. You will languish in misery, forever conscious of your mistake. That will be your sentence.  To suffer, until the end of time.”

The man took one last step, until he was nose-to-nose with Hunter. And he spoke just loudly enough for Nora to hear.  “But that pales in comparison to what they will do to her.”

Hunter snarled.

“Yes, her. Your precious human.” He spat the word. Then he raised his voice. “I know you are here, little one. Listen well to what I have to say.”

He returned his attention to Hunter. “She will suffer for your sin. A human mind and body is much weaker than that of our kind, and for that reason…she will be converted. And sentenced to suffer eternally alongside you.

“You know of the savage bloodlust that overtakes a new member of our race, do you not? Oh, but I think you do. You were once one of them, were you not? You were born a human.” Again, he spat the word. “A despicable thing. A despicable creature to risk so much for, wouldn’t you say?”

Hunter didn’t say a word, and the man continued. “I will give you one chance. One chance now, to repent. Give her up freely, and the punishment for your treason will be less severe. You will be bound for one century, before your freedom is returned.” He put a hand on Hunter’s shoulder. “You know you cannot win. Is she worth an eternity in hell?”

Nora caught a furtive movement at the door. The other hunter. “No!” she screamed. It was a trap.

On Nora’s cry, both newcomers looked in her direction. Hunter curled back from the man’s hand and smashed an elbow into his face. The thick man stumbled back.

Then he laughed cruelly and flung himself at Hunter.

Author Bio

Sophia SharpI’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember. Actually, that’s a bit of a lie. I’ve been writing since the third grade, when a wonderful teacher asked everyone in class to write a fairy tale, and ended up picking mine as his favorite. He didn’t tell the other kids, of course – but confided it in my parents. He said I have a natural knack for writing (his exact words! and I remember them to this day), and should never stop. So, I’ve kept going..

I’ve mostly been keeping it to myself, though. I’ve never really thought about becoming an “author,” or a “writer” (quotations because those goals are still so far away!), so never had the need to share with anyone or publicize my stories. But, I’m just finishing up my second year in college, and have really started to think about careers and life goals and such other mysterious things. And while my friends were all busy trying to get internships for the summer this year, I just kept to myself with my writing hobby. I don’t have an interest in going out and working professionally in the “real world” — I want to keep writing forever, and I want to have time to do it. The only way I see myself having that time, though, is by becoming a published author.

So there you have it. That’s the abbreviated history of one Sophia Sharp. I’ve been working on a few young adult paranormal/fantasy novels for the past few months, and I’m putting them all up as soon as they’re done! Why young adult? Because it’s what I love to read. And why paranormal/fantasy? Because that genre gives the greatest opportunities for creating a magical, romantic, quixotic world that I can fall in love with.

How incredibly gorgeous is this cover??  I think this book sounds really great and I can’t wait to read it.  Supernatural powers?  Ancient secret?  Romance?  YES PLEASE!  Make sure to enter the giveaway below for a chance to win your own copy!  Also – it is an INTERNATIONAL giveaway!  If you’re not lucky enough to win a copy and still want one, it is only .99 cents to buy!  The second book in the saga will be out very soon in January, so there isn’t a long wait time for the next installment.  Good luck to everybody 🙂

Blogoversary Countdown – Day 1

Blogoversary

Day 1

Comparing year 1 and 2

I think it is funny when I think about now in comparison to my first year of blogging.  I had no clue what I was doing when I first started my blog and it began as a simple black background, then blue, then an ocean header, but eventually I finally settled into my current set up.  I had to learn a lot of stuff on my own like how to make buttons and html tags (which I now have memorized).  I found things to learn and research through other blogs I follow and seeing the cool things on their blogs made me say – hey, I want to know how to do that, so thanks to all the awesome bloggers I follow that helped me make my blog better!

My first year, I only had a few pages up and now I have added a review archive, meme and giveaway pages, separate challenge pages and I have a blog specifically for my giveaways since Rafflecopter doesn’t work on wordpress.  I started out my giveaways in the google documents, and I am glad I don’t have to do it that way anymore because hand typing that many entries into the randomizer on Random.org would be a pain!  I love Rafflecopter!  Thanks to Brittany at The Book Addict’s Guide, who I stole the idea from to host my giveaways on a separate blog.

I’m always on the lookout for new ways to improve my blog and if anybody sees anything that needs to be fixed or improved I am not against suggestions 🙂  I have also been debating on changing to self hosted and knocking off the wordpress.com part of my website.  This may not be for a bit since I am strapped for cash.  This past year was also my first year as a home owner, so it is a huge difference from having rommates and splitting bills on everything.

There are still things I am learning, too, like better ways to try to be more organized and I still haven’t mastered scheduling and planning ahead for posts since I am such a procrastinator.  We will see what year 3 brings 🙂

Blogoversary Countdown – Day 2

Blogoversary

Day 2

Blogging tools

So, in the past year I have found some thing that have helped me in blogging.  A lot of you probably already know about them, but I am going to mention them anyway because they are awesome!

Bloglovin

I have tried a couple of different blog readers, but Bloglovin is by far the best one I have come across.  It  is easy to use and has a nice simple layout.  Links popup in a second window so you don’t have to worry about going back and forth or losing your place in your post queue.  Bloglovin also has an app you can download for your phone, so no worries about not being at your computer since it is mobile!

WordPress App

I got the wordpress app on my phone sometime later last year, but I couldn’t get it to work correctly for me.  I don’t know if it was because the app wasn’t working like it should or if it was because my phone sucked, but once I got my new phone and updated my apps, it worked wonderfully.  I use it to write up drafts of my posts, but I don’t actually post them because, the one downside I can find, is that I can not access my media gallery from the app.  So if I am making a post for one of my memes like Waiting on Wednesday, I can’t go in and get the WoW image I always use from the gallery.  So, I just make draft posts and go back and add my images in and format how I want it later.  This is really helpful to me since before when I wanted to make a draft, but wasn’t around my computer, I just wrote them down, which was a pain to go back and type up.

Pinterest

Pinterest is cool because I can pin all of my reviews and memes and such to pin boards to share with my followers.  Click the pin and it takes you to my website!  It also helps me since I tend to be forgetful and I am doing a meme like Waiting on Wednesday or Cover Crush and I can’t remember if I already posted a certain book for it.  I can just look at my board and see which covers have been pinned.  Also, if you like to not only read books, but write them, you can do pin boards for character inspirations and such, and they can be secret pin boards, too, so only you and people you invite can see those boards (I have one myself).  I just added my pinterest follow button, so follow me on pinterest if you like 🙂

These are some very useful tools when doing stuff for book blogging!  If anyone knows of any other newer tools that can be helpful, please let me know!  I am always on the lookout for more things that are helpful for blogging 🙂

Day 3

Awesome bookish experience

I had an awesome experience this past year, and it wasn’t just the most awesome experience this past year of blogging, but during my whole time blogging in general.  I was able to go to YALLFEST this past November and it was incredible!  It was my first big author event and there were a ton of great authors there.  I took my cousin with me who was dorking out like I was and we had such a blast.  It was in Charleston SC which is about a 3 hour drive from where I live.  So we got up at 6 am hopped in the car and drove down to Charleston, parked and immediately got in line for the keynote speakers (Clarissa Clare and Holly Black).  We walked around the block so many times back and forth watching awesome panels, standing in autograph lines, and even watching sneak peak behind the scene stuff for the City of Bones movie!  I got books signed by Clarissa Clare, Holly Black, Gayle Forman, Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl and Stephanie Perkins.  Afterward, there was a really funny YA Smackdown where the authors improvised skits and genres competed against one another.  Absolutely hilarious!  It was a truly amazing experience.  Once things were done, we drove 3 hours back and we were beyond exhausted, my feet hurt and were blistered from my shoes and walking so much, but it was worth it!  I can’t wait to go back again this November.  There are around 50 great authors that will be coming, so I highly suggest a trip to anyone who can make it!  It is only a day, but it is an awesome day.

Day 5

My favorite book this past year

I read a bunch of really good books this past year so this one is a bit harder to choose. I even added a few new ones to my faves list I like some of them so much.  I think that for this year though that my favorite would have to be On the Jellicoe Road.

On The Jellicoe Road Cover

I wouldn’t have read this book had it not been for all the rave reviews I saw around the blogosphere.  It sounded a bit interesting when I read the synopsis, but that wasnt enough to really make me feel like I had to read it right away.  The synopsis really doesn’t do this book justice for pulling you in.  It was a fabulous read and touched me in so many ways.  The story was so hopeful and tragic and beautiful all at once.  So I have to say THANK YOU to all the bloggers that the wrote reviews that convinced me to read this story!  If you havent read it yet, you really should and if you would like to see my review you can read it here and I hope it convinces someone to read it like I was!  Do you have a favorite read for this past year?
